"Texas Passes Bill Prohibiting Transgender Medical Procedures for Minors"

Breaking News

The Texas Legislature has passed Senate Bill 14, which is now awaiting Republican Governor Greg Abbott's signature. This bill would make Texas the latest state to prohibit hormone therapies, puberty blockers, and sex change surgeries for minors. The measure, supported by Republicans and advocates, aims to protect children from potentially life-altering medical procedures. While the bill received support from some Democrats, it faced opposition from Democratic lawmakers and protesters who advocate for "gender-affirming care."

The legislation comes amid ongoing debates in Texas over another bill, Senate Bill 15, known as the "Save Women's Sports Act," which seeks to ban biological males identifying as female from participating in women's collegiate sports. If enacted, Texas would join other conservative states in implementing similar transgender sports bans.

The New Bill-

Under the new law, minors who are already undergoing hormone replacement therapies and puberty blockers before June 1 will be allowed to gradually discontinue the prescribed drugs under medical supervision. However, the bill explicitly prohibits surgeries that result in sterilization of minors, including procedures such as castration, vasectomy, hysterectomy, and others.
Similar laws banning transgender-related medical procedures for minors have been passed in 17 other states, according to the Equality Federation. These laws often focus on prohibiting puberty blockers, hormone therapies, and sex change surgeries for minors. Some states have introduced measures that allow malpractice lawsuits against healthcare providers who perform gender transition procedures on minors, while others have established strict restrictions, including making it a felony to perform such procedures on minors.
Lawmakers supporting these bans highlight the life-altering consequences of such treatments and have been influenced by the experiences of Detransitioners. Detransitioners, individuals who regret gender-affirming procedures and seek to reverse them, have shared their stories with lawmakers, claiming they were misled by doctors and transgender activists and now suffer irreversible effects from the treatments they received.
